What is OpenFront?

OpenFront is a multiplayer real-time strategy game about expanding territory and outmaneuvering rival nations. You begin with a small foothold and balance expansion, diplomacy, and defense as the map fills with competing players.

Cities raise your population cap, ports generate trade income, and factories support rail networks. Warships open a naval front, while missile silos and SAM launchers bring nuclear attacks and interception into the battle.

OpenFront Beginner Guide

Learn how to play OpenFront, from choosing your starting territory to surviving your first border conflicts. Follow a practical opening built around expansion, troop recovery, and your first city.

  1. 1

Practice spawning, attacking, and construction in the built-in solo tutorial.

  2. 2

In manual-spawn matches, select a starting area before the countdown ends.

  3. 3

Expand into adjacent unclaimed land, then compare neighboring armies before attacking occupied territory.

  4. 4

Let troops recover between attacks and build a City to raise your maximum troop capacity.

OpenFront Buildings & Economy

Understand what Cities, Ports, Factories, and Defense Posts contribute before choosing your next investment. Compare troop capacity, trade income, and border protection instead of following one build order on every map.

  • Cities

Cities increase troop capacity. Under standard settings, your first City costs 125,000 gold.

  • Ports

Coastal Ports generate trade-ship routes and enable Warship construction; blocked trade can interrupt their economic value.

  • Factories & Trains

Factories support railway networks. Trains earn gold at eligible City and Port stops; Factory stops themselves do not pay trade income.

  • Defense Posts

Nearby borders gain defensive protection. Under standard settings, your first Defense Post costs 50,000 gold.

OpenFront Strategy & Attack Ratio

Learn how troop commitment, terrain, and enemy defenses change the outcome of an attack. Understand retreat costs and avoid draining your reserve army during expansion.

  • Attack Ratio

The attack slider selects 1% to 100% of your available troops for an attack, not a percentage of your maximum capacity.

  • Target Selection

Combat calculations account for attacking troops, the defender's army and territory, terrain, and nearby Defense Posts.

  • Retreat Penalty

Manually cancelling a land attack against an opponent loses 25% of the troops remaining in that attack.

  • Defensive Reserve

Troops committed to an attack are deducted from your available army, so large simultaneous attacks leave fewer troops at home.

OpenFront Nukes & SAM Defense

Compare Atom Bombs, Hydrogen Bombs, and MIRVs before committing gold to a nuclear strike. Learn how Missile Silos launch attacks and how SAM coverage affects your defensive plan.

  • Atom Bombs

These smaller-area nuclear strikes launch from Missile Silos and destroy territory and structures around the impact point.

  • Hydrogen Bombs

A Hydrogen Bomb has a much wider blast than an Atom Bomb, so check nearby allied territory before choosing a target.

  • MIRVs

A MIRV separates into multiple warheads aimed across the selected opponent's territory.

  • SAM Launchers

SAMs intercept hostile nuclear missiles within their effective coverage. Upgrading a launcher expands its interception range.

OpenFront Maps & Starting Positions

Compare the opening challenges of Europe, Asia, and World maps. Plan around available land, narrow borders, and ocean access rather than assuming one starting position wins every lobby.

  • Europe

Chokepoints make border agreements and the timing of an attack important parts of expansion.

  • Asia

Large open areas create opportunities for rapid expansion and require attention to exposed borders.

  • World

Ocean routes add long-distance naval threats and opportunities beyond your immediate land neighbors.

  • Starting Position

Check whether the lobby uses manual or random spawning; manual selection remains adjustable until the spawn timer expires.

OpenFront Naval Warfare & Boats

Separate troop transport, trade, and combat roles before building your navy. Learn how Warships protect water routes, capture trade ships, and return to Ports for repairs.

  • Transport Boats

With water access, send troops to another coastline through the boat action; transport boats are not combat Warships.

  • Warship Patrols

Warships patrol assigned waters and engage hostile transport boats and Warships.

  • Trade-Ship Capture

Warships can capture eligible enemy trade ships instead of simply sinking them.

  • Port Repairs

Damaged Warships can retreat to a reachable owned Port. Port level determines how many Warships can dock for repairs.

OpenFront Alliances & Diplomacy

Learn how to request alliances, coordinate targets, and support neighboring allies. Check renewal timers and betrayal penalties before ending a truce.

  • Alliance Requests

An accepted alliance prevents direct attacks between its members while it remains active.

  • Resource Sharing

Allies can donate troops and gold, and use target markers to coordinate attacks.

  • Renewal

The standard alliance duration is 5 minutes. Custom lobbies can change the duration, so watch the active timer.

  • Betrayal

Betraying an ally who is not already a traitor normally applies a 50% defense penalty for 30 seconds.

OpenFront Controls & Hotkeys

Use the default keyboard shortcuts to build, attack, and manage Warships without repeatedly opening menus. Check your keybinding settings first, because saved custom bindings can override these defaults.

  • Buildings: 1-6

1 selects City, 2 Factory, 3 Port, 4 Defense Post, 5 Missile Silo, and 6 SAM Launcher.

  • Military: 7-0

7 selects Warship, 8 Atom Bomb, 9 Hydrogen Bomb, and 0 MIRV.

  • Attack: G, B, T, Y

G triggers a ground attack, B a boat attack, T lowers the attack ratio, and Y raises it.

  • Camera: WASD, Q, E, C

WASD moves the camera, Q zooms out, E zooms in, and C centers the camera on your territory.

  • Fleet: Shift and F

Hold Shift and drag to box-select Warships; F selects all your Warships.

Common Questions

OpenFront FAQ

Is OpenFront free to play?

You can play OpenFront free in the browser at openfront.io. The Steam release is a paid Early Access version, and official information states that the browser and Steam versions share the same servers.

Does OpenFront support cross-platform play?

Yes. Official sources state that browser and Steam players use the same servers, so players on either version can meet in the same match.

What do cities, ports and factories do in OpenFront?

Cities raise your maximum troop capacity, ports generate trade income, and factories support rail networks that move resources between your territories. Which one you build first depends on your gold and your position on the map.

How do I defend against nuclear attacks?

Missile silos launch nuclear weapons, while SAM launchers intercept incoming missiles. Coverage, placement and the number of launchers decide how much of your territory survives a late-game strike.

Which platforms can run OpenFront?

OpenFront runs in a web browser and on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux. Browser play works on mobile devices; a native mobile app has not been confirmed.

Are there OpenFront reward codes?

We have not found public codes that grant in-game rewards. OpenFront does have Creator Codes, but those are used to support creators and split purchase revenue, so they are not reward codes.
